Passive Safety

Passive Safety

Passive safety means all design measures taken to protect the occupants of vehicles from injury, or to reduce the risk of injury. The term refers in particular to behaviour in a collision (crash tests) and looks beyond self-preservation to the protection of other road users (joint protection). Besides the seat belt system (see also: belt tensioners), the most important passive safety features in today’s vehicles include the airbags, the deformation-resistant occupant cell and the front and rear deformation zones. These provide a great amount of protection for the occupants by dissipating the impact energy. Taken together with the active safety aspects, all Volkswagen models offer outstanding all-round protection.
